Imawildandcrazyguy was aptly named by Mike Eigner, one of his co-owners. A big powerful grey, he arrived at our barn thinking he was incharge. After one day of trying to hurt himself, his excercise rider, and his groom, we had to geld him. He has settled down on the track since, but he still has his moments around the barn when he is negotiating who the boss is.

Bill Kaplan
“I knew he’d be running in the end, but he lost a lot of ground on the turn. He must have been about ten wide. I am very pleased, though. I’m very happy with his performance.”

Imawildandcrazyguy is a relentless closer who keeps coming on. The longer the race the better for this endurance specialist. With his style and determination, Imawildandcrazyguy has been very exciting to watch run and should prove to be very effective in the "classic"distances.

Starter Analysis
Tough Florida bred who has stayed in top class since an impressive allowance score at Calder in December of his two-year-old campaign. After staying in South Florida for his first eight tries, he was put on the Kentucky Derby trail via the Risen Star (GIII) and the Louisiana Derby (GII) both at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans. Good showings in both those events (2nd and 4th respectively) convinced connections that a return to Florida for the Florida Derby (GI) at Gulfstream was the best option. His 6th place finish in that event didn't necessarily make him a well fancied runner for the Kentucky Derby, (GI) but he managed a sustained run to finish fourth in America's biggest event.

After skipping the Preakness Stakes, (GI) Imawildandcrazyguy had a poor showing in the Belmont Stakes (GI) and returned to his home base at Calder in an Allowance where he won comfortably as the odds-on choice. He's been thrown back into the big time with runs in both the Haskell (GI) and Pennsylvania Derby (GII) where he didn't manage a placing in either.

The first attempt on the grass was in the Needles Stakes on September 22nd, a race that quite a few participants in the Calder Derby are coming out of. Managed a decent third in that one, but one couldn't say it was an overly impressive effort. The back-class and familiar name should draw some money this one's way, but others have show much better form over the lawn.

Pedigree Analysis
Imawildandcrazyguy is by Wild Event, who began his stud career in Florida and now resides at Haras Santa Mar?a de Araras in Brazil. Wild Event broke his maiden at two, but didn't race at three. The next three seasons, he was one of the leading turf horses of the mid-1990s. He scored wins in the Arlington Handicap (GII), W.L. McKnight Handicap (GII), River City Handicap (GIII), Fourstardave Handicap (GIII) and the Early Times Turf Classic (GI), all on the grass. His success on the green shouldn't be a surprise, since he is a half-brother to grass champion Paradise Creek and $1.6 million earner Forbidden Apple, all out of the daughter of Theatrical, North of Eden.

Imawildandcrazyguy is out of the unraced Top Account mare Frosty Cupcake. Our subject colt is her only runner from three foals to date. Frosty Cupcake's dam is a half-sister to the sire Din's Dancer and Ak-sar-ben Oaks winner Ten Bid. Top Account was probably at his best a mile or under, but he did win the Rushaway as a 3-year-old.

Imawildandcrazyguy is inbred to a couple of very interesting horses: Shenanigans (4x5), the dam of the immortal Ruffian; and Hoist the Flag (4x4 on his female side), the favorite for the 1971 Derby before injury ended his career.
